The Physics of NASCAR

Even though NASCAR started as a backwoods illegal race to run moonshine, it has today evolved into a sport that is not only entertaining but depends on physics too. The obvious element in the physics and the aerodynamic design required by these cars in order to achieve top speeds of near 200 mph with the minimum drag coefficient. But there are other forces involved too such as Newton's Law of Motion and centripetal force.

Newton's Law of Motion states that a body will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by some external force. In outer space for example, in the absence of gravity, an object will go on forever. So there are forces that resist the movement of this vehicle such as wind drag and another known as centripetal force.

Centripetal force should not be confused with centrifugal force. However without getting too technical, you can think of centripetal force as a real force acting perpendicular to the motion of the moving body. Centrifugal force on the other hand is actually a fictitious force and what we feel as we are thrown outward from a moving vehicle is the reaction force.

Centripetal force in the physics of NASCAR is crucial to keeping a car on the track. The tires of the vehicle provide the friction which is part of the centripetal force. The centripetal force needed to keep the car on the track cannot exceed the square of the speed of the car. To put it in simple terms, if the car takes a turn too fast, the wheels leave the ground and an accident occurs. The physics of NASCAR dictates that turns on the racetrack must be banked in order to increase the friction (part of the centripetal force) to hold the car.

Another component of the physics that serves to keep the vehicle with all four wheels on the track during the race is center of gravity. Center of gravity is basically the point where you could balance the car on the top of a flag pole (theoretically). Racing vehicles need low centers of gravity in order to keep the weight close to the track. If a vehicle has a high center of gravity then it can lose control when it hits a turn much faster. Think of an ambulance with a high profile patient area. If the ambulance took a turn too fast, it would topple over. But if its profile was not too high, it could take the turn faster because the center of gravity is lower.

An ambulance needs the high profile in order to get patients in and treat them but the physics of NASCAR dictate the low center of gravity in order to apply more centripetal force and keep it attached to the track on a turn.

Then there is the machining of engine components in the physics of NASCAR that are important for building horsepower with the minimum of friction. You want friction when it comes to centripetal force but you don't want it inside of an engine. This is why internal engine parts are machined to within very accurate tolerances-much more accurately than automobiles for family and everyday use. Why? It is because you want to minimize friction inside the engine. When engines torque at these speeds, friction is a very dangerous enemy.

After the second world war stock car racing was very popular and drew big crowds. As its popularity grew so did the number of make-shift tracks increased. Due to the lack of a governing body often the rules varied from track to track and safety standards were inadequate.

In 1947 Bill France organized a meeting at the Streamline Hotel to discuss introducing a governing body for the stock car races. Bill was born in Washington D.C to his mother Emma Graham, an Irish immigrant, and father William Henry France. Bill France usually organized races on the beach-road courses and also raced in them himself. At the end of the meeting the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was created.

However the Cup Series, originally called the premier division, did not start until 1949 and its first race was held on 19th June 1949 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Fairgrounds. It was a big success and attracted a large crowd.

In 1950 the plans were made to allow the race to grow bringing bigger crowds and faster cars which led to the creation of the Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.

The first 10 years of NASCAR was an overwhelming success with the drivers soon becoming super-stars and heroes to the masses of fans that attended the races. The NASCAR race had outgrown the track at Daytona beach and moved to Daytona International Speedway with a 2.5 mile track banked at 30 degrees. The first competition that took place at the new track ended in a photo-finish that took the judges 3 days of deliberation to decide on the winner, Petty.

Even with the new Daytona racetrack the thirst for bigger and faster cars was still there and in 1960 Frank opened the 2.66-mile Alabama International Motor Speedway which is also known as Talladega Superspeedway. The need for more tracks led to new tracks being created throughout the country in places such as Brooklyn, Dover and Pocono.

NASCAR's Nationwide Series Flexing Muscle in 2010

Amidst the declining popularity of NASCAR racing, the organization has announced its lineup for the 2010 Nationwide Series in hopes of stirring up some excitement amongst race teams and fans alike.  For the first time in ages, most of the cars running in the series will actually resemble the production models that they represent.  This new direction is a result of the opinions of a majority of unhappy fans and the major race sponsors that felt their products weren't being properly advertised on the track.  With auto companies struggling financially, it didn't make sense to continue to sponsor cars that look nothing like the showroom versions.

The theme of the 2010 Nationwide Series seems to be a throwback to reissued American muscle cars.  We've all already been able to see a version of the Dodge Charger in action over the past few months.  Expect to see a newly redesigned body for 2010.  While its steep sloping shape does not reflect the exact shape of the production model, many physical characteristics were added to make it look like the standard Charger.  The most notable feature is the hood.  It almost looks like it was ripped right out of the showroom and placed on the race car.  Since this is one of the defining elements of this Dodge muscle car, it is refreshing to see that it was implemented.  Thus far, the vehicle has shown that it can hold its own on the race track.

For the first time ever, the Ford Mustang will make its way into realm of NASCAR.  It was just recently announced that the major body features have been finalized and aerodynamics testing is underway.  Body templates and kits will be sent out to car builders later this year.  This newly redesigned racer very closely resembles the standard production model.  Ford hopes that their investment into the new race car will help spur auto sales.

General Motors is expected to enter its Chevrolet Camaro into the Nationwide Series some time in the near future.  Many racing insiders assumed that GM would announce their entry when word came that the Charger and Mustang will be part of the line up.  It has been suggested that the struggling automaker may not be willing to dump enough funds into getting the Camaro on the track, but insiders have insisted that an announcement will come soon.  No one is sure exactly what the design will look like, but it is expected to be in line with the vehicles released by Ford and Dodge.

NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Sr - From Boy to Superstar

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was born on April 29th, 1951 in Kannapolis, North Carolina and sadly died at aged 49 on February 18th, 2001 as a result of massive head trauma from a crash in the final lap of 2001 Daytona 500. Dale Sr. was also known as The Intimidator but those who knew him, would say differently. He was a philanthropist and never found the need for media coverage of his donations.

His father, Ralph Earnhardt, was one of the best known short-track drivers in North Carolina. He was not very encouraging of his son's ambition of racing cars as well and even when he dropped out of high school to race, Ralph was hard on his son. Ralph did teach his son everything he knew and set the stage to make him the driver he turned into. His father realized that his driving skill came naturally and as such made his son view his mistakes as open mindedly as possible. Earnhardt Sr. appreciated everything his father did for him and missed his presence sorely when he died of a heart attack in 1973.

Although Sr. started racing professionally at age 23, he ran his first race at Metolina Fairgrounds in Charlotte in the 1970 season where he finished in 10th place. In 1971, he finally won his first race which would then bring about 26 more wins while still racing at Metolina and Concord Motor Speedway. After he had quit school, he worked at several places like for an insulation company and he was also a welder who did brake jobs as well. Dale's decision to race for a career came about after his father's death. He bought an asphalt-track car while still competing at Metrolina. Although money was tight, Earnhardt Sr. always found away to get through it.

He began his Winston Cup career in 1975. In 1978, things took a turn for the better when he met Teresa Houston who then helped pave the way for Dale's path to NASCAR success. Once out of his rookie season, he started the season off with a win in the Busch Clash. He became the first and only driver thus far to have won Rookie of the year and then winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship. He eventually went on to race for Richard Childress Racing in 1981 and then joined Bud Moore during the 1982 and 1983 season. After that he went back to Richard Childress Racing and in that time, managed to secure victory 6 times at Talladega, Atlanta, Richmond, Bristol and Martinsville.

He went on to carve NASCAR history in the following two decades. It is talked about the bigger things that could have been achieved had Earnhardt Sr. survived the fatal crash that took away a NASCAR legend. His #3 car was retired by his team owner who has promised never to let another car on his team be designed similarly. Although he was both loved and hated in NASCAR, he has remained one of the sport's most popular drivers. Dale made sure his private life was kept private. When he wasn't on the tracks, he was with his family, hunting, fishing, working on his farm and known as generous giver amongst his friends. In 2004, his life story was made into a television movie, titled "3: The Dale Earnhardt Story" and in 2007, a documentary-style movie was released into theaters. Even in death, many still remember the great things Dale Sr. accomplished and tributes in song, movies and books have been dedicated to the passing to the brightest star of NASCAR.

Next stop on the Nextel Cup Schedule is Talladega Superspeedway, Bam-da-Lam

The driver's standings could get a complete over-haul next week as NASCAR heads to Talladega Superspeedway. With only seconds often separating 1st from 40th at restrictor plate tracks, a driver can stand to gain or lose many positions depending on where he is in the draft. And, of course, you can never forget the "Big One"; the wreck that takes out multiple cars due to the close proximity of the cars in the draft traveling at speeds approaching 200mph!

Of all current drivers with 2 or more career starts at Talladega, Kurt Busch has had the most success. In 12 starts, Busch has an average finish of 11th.

Jeff Gordon Updates His Place in the History Books!

Jeff Gordon moved closer to the top of NASCAR's history book by capturing his 59th career pole, and 76th career victory at Phoenix. The 59th pole ties him with Darrell Waltrip for 4th in all-time poles while the 76th victory ties him with the late Dale Earnhardt for 6th in all-time wins.

While Jeff Gordon's success in NASCAR is completely attributed to him, he owes the 76th victory to crew chief Steve Letarte. In the last pit cycle of the Subway Fit 500, Gordon found himself trapped on pit-road when the last caution of the race came out. While Gordon almost drove through pit road to beat the pace car and stay on the lead lap, crew chief Letarte ordered Gordon to pit anyway.

`I almost drove through the pit. Steve made the call and I love him. He's as sharp as can be. He's so cool under pressure' said Gordon. Letarte knew that his team could complete a pit stop and still allow Gordon to get out in front of the pace car.

In the end, Gordon was able to come out on the lead lap with 4 tires and fuel before the other lead lap cars had a chance to pit. Once the pit-stops were fully cycled, Gordon was the leader.

In the end, split-second ingenuity on the part of Letarte put Gordon in the lead. If Jeff had driven through pit-road, he would have found himself an insurmountable number of positions down and unable to capture his first win ever at Phoenix International Raceway.

Penske Racing Starting to Make Big Strides!

While the results in Saturday's Subway Fit 500 do not show it, Penske Racing is making a comeback. The closing laps prior to the final caution found drivers Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman running in 5th and 6th positions respectively. Unfortunately, after making early pit stops on the final cycle of the race and then going down a lap when the final caution of the race came out, both Busch and Newman were sent towards the end of the field.

Kurt Busch suffered from a similar setback last week in the Samsung 500 where he challenged for the lead at certain points in the race only to finish in 11th. None-the-less, with both teams now showing they can run with the top dogs, its obvious Penske is on a comeback.

Expect both Kurt and Ryan to continue running well in the remaining Car of Tomorrow races. Of all teams, Penske has most embraced the new COT and has performed more tests with the new cars than any other team in NASCAR!

Subway Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway Recap

NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow got the validation it much needed at Saturday night's Subway Fit 500 at Phoenix. In the closing laps of the race, both Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon made daring passes to claim the lead. If those same passes were made with the "Car of Yesterday", the lead driver would have been spinning out of control into the outside retaining wall while the trailing car breezed by for the lead.

With the new rear spoiler and front splitter, the new COT's are no longer as aero sensitive with cars trailing on the rear bumper. The front splitter diverts air around the side of the cars providing lateral stability down the sides of the car while the straight rear spoiler provides more down force. This all helped lead to one of the more dramatic finishes to a race this year!

How the top drivers faired:

Jeff Gordon put on his best performance in recent time after his crew chief, Steve Letarte, made an ingenious decision to stay on pit road when the final caution came out. By being in the pit box closest to the scoring line, the #24 team was able to execute a pit stop and allow Jeff to pull out in front of the pace car to stay on the lead lap. Jeff assumed the lead when the other lead lap cars pitted under caution, and was able to capture his 76th career victory.

Tony Stewart must have been smoking hot at the conclusion of the Subway Fit 500. One of NASCAR's brashest drivers was out-raced by Jeff Gordon in the closing laps. However, the 2nd place finish by Stewart gave him a much needed boost. Smoke jumped two spots in the standings and now sits in 7th place.

Dale Earnhardt Jr had a mediocre day, but mediocrity is what the most popular drive in NASCAR needs at the moment. After failing to finish 3 races this year, the 19th place finish on Saturday boosted Jr. to 15th place in the points.

Jimmie Johnson is exhibiting the same championship form he had last year. The reigning champion finished in 4th place, his 5th top 5 finish of the year. He now sits 4th in points.

Mark Martin's streak of top 5 finished came to end when the semi-retired driver finished 12th in the Subway Fit 500. Mark Martin still sits in 10th place after taking 2 weeks off earlier in the year.

What Can NASCAR Teach Us About Packaging?

The first NASCAR race of 2006 ran recently at Daytona and I was surprised by the number of new product sponsors. For years NASCAR has been a "good ol boy" thing, however, marketers have finally realized that this is huge untapped and under marketed advertising segment.

We have to admit that there are loads of stereotypes about the typical NASCAR audience. Ever heard this description, "Red necked, long haired, tobacco chewing, cigarette smoking, good ol boy?" Well, that used to be true of NASCAR viewers but auto racing now is one of the few sports that are gaining in popularity among all demographic segments. Face it. Popularity equals advertising revenue and sales.

Two current market groups that NASCAR is chasing for increased viewer ship are the 50+ generation and women. Previously, little marketing was done to attract these viewers. They were outside the perceived target market. Sponsors typically were auto companies, auto parts and suppliers, beer, soda, cell phones, and generally services and companies that were in the male purview. But now there are a lot of avid NASCAR fans in the over 50 generation, myself included. Until now, sponsors haven't really sought them out as an audience.

When I did some marketing for an IROC driver, I was surprised to learn about the strength of the fans. One thing that really came home was the brand loyalty of those who supported NASCAR. When a NASCAR driver endorsed a product, it was used by an overwhelming proportion of NASCAR aficionados; a much higher average of brand loyalty than conventional markets.

An interesting campaign that I have been following is the Crown Royal endorsement of NASCAR. The company continues to sponsor the No. 26 Crown Royal Ford Fusion driven by NASCAR NEXTEL Cup star Jamie McMurray. Crown Royal is collaterally branding their campaign with new packaging and launching the Speedway Collector's Series, a line of limited edition packages that is customized to highlight the 21 tracks that host races during the 2006 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season. The Crown Royal purple bag, bottle label and carton will display customized motor sports packaging, including logos for storied tracks like Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Super Speedway. Smart and unique marketing! Most product packaging efforts have been limited to cast iron models and replicas of the cars or typical car stuff.

So why am interested? It's all in the packaging, of course. In addition to advertising and endorsing a driver, companies are integrating all facets of a marketing campaign and utilizing packaging as a branding tool. If I were a smart marketer, I would look for underserved segments of the viewers just like Crown Royal has done. Even though there have been several women drivers that have tried unsuccessfully to penetrate NASCAR as professional drivers, the women's market makes up 50% of the US population. In my opinion it really hasn't been sought out. I'd brand a campaign that really hits home with women no matter what their age. Look at the Dove Campaign For Real Beauty as an example. Its being endorsed and supported long after then initial advertising campaign introduction.

So we've come full circle. What does NASCAR have to do with packaging? It's a hot, growing, untapped market for those who want consumers that demonstrate their brand loyalty. Does this ring any bells or blow any horns for you?

NASCAR History

NASCAR officially dates back to 1938, when Bill France Sr. held the very first NASCAR race. Back then, the prizes weren't much - a can of motor oil, or a pack of cigarettes. Still, it was a big deal to even have a prize! Previously, the races that would become NASCAR were held by bootleggers who had souped-up their automobiles to outrun Federal agents. The prize for outrunning one of those agents was not going to jail...or losing your life.

Even after Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Southerners still loved racing their fast cars. The early races were not well-organized, but there was a lot of demand from fans to see these cars race. Bill France Sr., a gas station owner, drove a stock car on weekends and recognized their popularity. He became manager of the Daytona Beach Race Course, and organized and promoted a series of popular races. His plans were put on hold when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Dec.1941, and France stopped his races for the duration of World War II.

After the war, France had the idea to create a highly-organized way of creating races that would guarantee that the drivers and crew were properly compensated. This organization was officially founded in 1947 and became known as the National Association for Stock Car Racing, or NASCAR.

The first officially-sanctioned NASCAR race was held in February 1948 in Daytona Beach. The following year, NASCAR began what would become the Winston Cup Series, known at the time as "Strictly Stock," with a $5,000 purse.

In 1950, NASCAR came to the new Darlington International Speedway in Darlington, South Carolina, which became known as the "first superspeedway." The track was built by local businessman Harold Brasington, who saw the potential in France's vision. Brasington's efforts were widely mocked as "Harold's Folley," but his plan paid off when the first race, on Labor Day 1950, was attended by 25,000 fans - more than twice the number Brasington had anticipated.

Plans for an official NASCAR headquarters in Daytona Beach were announced in 1954, and the final speedway was completed in 1959. NASCAR continued to thrive over the next several decades, continuing its expansion with such new speedways as the Talladega Superspeedway, which opened in 1969. In 1973, Bill France Sr. retired, leaving the company to his son, Bill Jr. As president of NASCAR, Bill France Jr. continued to expand the company, leading to many Fortune 500 companies coming in as sponsors for driving teams and events in the 1980s.

NASCAR has exploded in the 1990s and 2000s, becoming one of the most popular spectator sports in the U.S. Winston Cup Events topped 6 million attendees in 1998, the same year that NASCAR-licensed products topped $950 million in sales. The 21st century has brought about many changes, including increased television coverage of the races, and many variations in the track and point systems. Bill France Jr. retired in 2003, turning NASCAR over to his son Brian.

Over three generations, NASCAR has grown from a small gathering of cars to a multi-billion dollar industry. With its popularity continuing to soar, it promises to maintain its enormous popularity for many years to come.

Dodge Cars in the History of NASCAR
